ABSTRACT

One of the functions of Zakat, Sadaqah and Wakaf of ACIS UiTM is collecting and distributing zakat to the needy recipients (asnaf) among UiTM students. This is done in collaboration with Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS )since 1988. Every semester the recipients under the category of faqir and miskin will receive certain substantial amount of money.Nevertheless, to the best judgment of the researcher, no specific study has been conducted on the spending behaviour of these recipients. The study is necessary as the absence of such information may contribute to the lack of evidence on the effectivenessof zakat in reducing financial burden of the recipients. In this regard, this study is carried out to examine the spending behaviour of zakat recipients and to identify factors contribute to such behaviour. Questionnaires will be distributed to a total of 376 samples to be drawn from the population of recipients for the year 2014 and 2013 and the collected data will then be analysed empirically using SPSS.Important items are highlighted in the questionnaire such as food, fashionable items and accessories, travelling, private transportation, gadgets, entertainment, books/learning materials and payment for rent. Personal information which includes demographic and personal background of the recipients is also studied to relate with their spending attitudes. The outcomes of this research are patterns of spending of zakat recipients among UiTM students and the influential factors contributing to it. The study would propose the appropriate amount and type of zakat assistance that should be given to the recipients. Perhaps, a specific workshop on financial planning could be introduced to the recipients in order to educate them on the correct way of spending.
